Welcome to the Live Better Newsletter - September 2009
Vol. 9 No. 9

Welcome cool days of September!  The familiar feeling of fall is in the air as the glorious warm summer days are fading quietly into the past.  The kids are heading back to school and our daily work commute time is about to be doubled because of stopped busses, school patrols, and thousands of public school employees headed back to work after a long summer vacation.  All in all, our lives are about to be filled with yet another round of unprecedented non-stop activity!  And as the kids are getting ready for school, all of the parents are gearing up to play the roles of chauffer, coach, tutor, mom, dad, cook, maid, audience, and money tree. Beware!  During this busy time it will be easy to get sucked back into the trap of eating all of the wrong things and falling prey to the inactivity that will bring back the extra pounds you’ve worked so hard to lose, so you need to make sure you are fighting back!

In this month’s newsletter we will take a closer look at how you can continue to enjoy a slimmer, trimmer you, and giving some tips to make sure your back-to-school kids are eating right and staying healthy as they come into contact with fellow students!

It’s Back to School!  Keep those kids Healthy!

Many of us, especially those with children in school, will deal with colds, flu, and the challenge of keeping our overall energy high enough to maintain our busy schedules.  Back to school for everyone is a time to stay on guard by making sure we continue to eat a healthy diet, maintain a regimen of regular exercise, and follow a few simple rules in order to stay healthy.  Here are some practical tips to help you and your family stay on the path of good health.

When it comes to the health of you and your family there is no compromise!  If you are not eating right, are tired or fatigued, are over-stressed or not getting enough exercise, your immune system may not stay strong enough to stay in good health.  Every day all of us will be busy and working hard.  To top it off all of us will be inhaling hundreds of thousands of foreign micro-organisms, including cold viruses. Here are a few things you can do keep you and your family healthy.

  • The most important thing you can do for yourself and family is to make sure you eat right!  Make sure to consume plenty of foods containing phytochemicals, dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruits. Soy contains isoflavones which are phytochemicals.  Visit our web site for some great recipes to help you eat right during this busy time at http://www.genisoy.com/recipes/.
  • Eat foods filled with antioxidants that contribute to a strong immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which may promote a healthy immune system. Soy foods from Genisoy are filled with antioxidants such as C, E, and Selenium. It is vitally important in staying healthy to build and maintain a strong immune system.
  • Get plenty of regular exercise. Exercise helps increase your body's virus-killing cells.
  • Drink lots of fluids.  Stay well hydrated.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Get plenty of fresh air.  Staying inside increases the chance of dehydration which can increase your chances of catching a cold.
  • Don’t smoke, and limit alcohol consumption.
  • To avoid getting sick, avoid close contact with people you know are sick!
  • To avoid getting a cold, avoid sharing any items with anyone who has a cold! Don't drink from the same glass or use the same towel or pillow. At work, don’t touch a computer keyboard or telephone receiver that has been recently used by someone with a cold.  Also, make sure you clean your hands often and don’t touch your face.
  • Avoid touching heavily used public door knobs, drinking fountains, restroom fixtures or other heavily touched items.  Again, make sure to wash frequently and keep your hands away from your face.

Following these simple tips can dramatically increase your ability to maintain your weight and health!

Can Soy Help Maintain Weight Loss?  Absolutely!

In addition to the vast array of benefits derived from the consumption of soy products, there is a steady stream of information indicating that soy has a powerful connection with the ability to lose weight. In other words, when soy consumption goes up, weight goes down.

A diet including soy may be a significant factor in controlling caloric intake. It has been found that protein makes you feel full, or increases your state of satiety, for longer than if you ate mostly carbohydrates. The feeling of being full can lead to eating fewer calories during the day!  Soy foods have fewer calories, less fat and more protein than many other sources of protein.  Therefore, top-quality, lean protein from soy foods can aid in weight control and limit the craving for more food!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture advocates selecting lean sources of protein and eating foods that are higher in potassium, calcium, magnesium and other essential vitamins and nutrients, but lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. Soy foods can help Americans meet these dietary goals. Soy protein is not only low in fat, it is cholesterol free.

This fall, avoid eating too much, maintain your physical activity, and choose a proper diet complete with a variety of delicious soy food products. This balance and healthy lifestyle will help you manage your weight, reduce stress, and a whole host of other benefits that come from a health-conscious lifestyle!
