| Welcome to the Live Better Newsletter - May 2010 |
Vol. 10 No. 5 |
There are different stories of how the month of May got its name, but the most common and widely accepted version is that it came from Maia, the Roman goddess of spring and growth. In recent times the month of May seems to have less to do with spring and growth than it does with serving as the signal to prepare with extreme intensity for beaches, pools, backyard barbeques, and summer vacations!
Welcome to this month’s Live Better Newsletter, where we highlight the steady stream of exciting news about soy and what it can do for you. This month we’re going to give you some warning on how marketing companies are actually trying to wire your brain into eating foods that are not good for you. That’s right. Food marketers have figured out that our brains can actually be configured to consume their sugar, salt and fat-filled products! The result is the tremendous struggle of being caught in the middle of a strong desire to consume food that makes us fat, and the desire to be thin and fit. In the middle of this troubling place we offer hope.

The Perfect Body!
Marketing trends today try to lead us to believe that in order to be accepted and productive members of society our bodies must look like the ones we see on the cover of Fitness magazine. Your television set, magazines, and Internet are screaming at you to get your body ready for the summer, and the fastest and easiest way to your perfect body, they say, is to do it all their way! If you fall prey to this marketing you may be headed into a pit of despair and potentially dangerous health practices.
All too often when individuals fail to get instant body-sculpting results from a flurry of extreme diet and exercise programs they either quit altogether or turn to even more dangerous diets, drugs or expensive workout machinery that lead to the same results. The reality is that true long-term fitness resides in a lifestyle of good health practices, and over time these should lead not only to health and longevity, but a body you can be proud of. Don’t be deceived by “get a great body fast” marketing. Research has shown time and time again that a healthy lifestyle is more effective than any crash diet and exercise program. A good diet and moderate amount of exercise done on a daily basis can result in significant health improvements including lowered blood pressure, lowered risk of heart attack and stroke, weight loss, and a decrease in the chance of getting diabetes. Coupled with a good diet, sensible exercise can grow into true fitness and a terrific body.
And there are many sensible, fun and readily available ways to make a good diet and exercise a part of your healthy lifestyle! When it comes to exercise, remember to choose activities that you enjoy and do something every day. With so many ways to get some exercise, mix them up and do several different ones every day to keep your entire body in the game. Most of all have fun!
The single most important thing you can do to live a long and healthy life is to practice a proper diet. That’s right. The best way to avoid cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke is to simply put into your body a balanced and proper diet. What you eat, and how much you eat, will greatly reduce your risk of a wide variety of health problems and even untimely death. Eating well is your best defense against disease, and the best way to a happier and healthier you. Part of your balanced diet should include the proper amounts of high-quality protein. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded that soy protein consumption (at least 25g per day) included in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels. In addition, research has shown that soy protein has powerful links to cancer prevention, weight control, menopause symptom alleviation, increasing energy, osteoporosis treatment, and more! In other words, it makes great sense to eat soy protein!
Genisoy has a family of protein packed products that includes bars, shakes, powders, soy nuts, trail mixes, soy crisps, potato soy crisps and protein crunch bars. All of them are loaded with healthy soy protein. Make sure to include Genisoy protein products as a regular part of your daily diet.

A book by former Food and Drug Administration chief, Dr. David Kessler, reveals that not unlike “typical” substance abuse addictions such as drugs, nicotine, and alcohol, our brains can also be wired to crave certain kinds of foods. If this isn’t bad enough, the food marketers are keenly aware of it and taking full advantage! Learn how you can avoid being set up for a lifetime of food obsession due to the ever-present availability of foods laden with salt, fat and sugar.
This book by Kessler validates various other brain studies that many people really do have a more difficult time resisting food that is bad for them. It also serves to make consumers aware not only of the dangers of food addictions, but of food marketers that take advantage of vulnerabilities in the brain to sell their unhealthy products.
Kessler figures out that the food industry knows how the brain gets wired, and they know what drives people to keep on eating. Armed with that knowledge, marketing principles then go to work to take advantage of what Kessler calls “conditioned hyper-eating.” Conditioned hyper-eating is similar to an “ordinary” addiction where the brain is re-wired, and willpower is broken by the drive to eat high-fat, high-sugar foods even when the “addict” is not hungry. At issue is how fat-and-sugar combinations in particular tickle the brain's pleasure center, the same pathway that conditions people to abuse alcohol or drugs.
So what is the answer to a brain that has been conditioned to hyper-eat? Resistance! Kessler says that like a brain on drugs and alcohol, it must be retrained to resist the temptation to eat. And also like drug and alcohol recovery, once you recognize the problem, steps can be put into place to change the behavior.
The first step should be toward the goal of eating the right foods in order to lose weight. Soy protein has received a lot of attention for its ability to aid in weight loss and weight management. Remember that the overall key to weight management is finding the right balance between diet and exercise, and studies suggest that soy protein may be an important part of the process!
Research confirms the importance of a diet that includes plant protein, such as soy, as it may be a significant factor in controlling caloric intake. Protein makes you feel full, or increases your state of satiety, for longer than if you ate mostly carbohydrates. The feeling of being full can lead to eating fewer calories during the day! Soy foods have fewer calories, less fat and more protein than many other sources of protein. Therefore, top-quality, lean protein from soy foods can aid in weight control and limit the craving for more food!
The importance of these findings cannot be understated in the midst of a society where obesity has become an epidemic of vast proportion. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture advocate selecting lean sources of protein and eating foods that are higher in potassium, calcium, magnesium and other essential vitamins and nutrients, but lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. Soy foods can help Americans meet these dietary goals. Soy protein is not only low in fat, it is cholesterol free. So avoid eating too much, increase your physical activity, and choose a proper diet complete with a variety of delicious soy food products. This balance and healthy lifestyle will help you manage your body weight, reduce stress, and maintain proper weight, not to mention a whole host of other benefits that come from a health conscious lifestyle!
