For the first time in history, the government reported last month that the life expectancy in the United States surpassed 78 years. Although trailing 30 other countries in life span, and in the midst of an overweight/obesity epidemic, the jump in life expectancy in the U.S. is good news!
Japan still leads the charts in life expectancy which is 83 years for children born in 2006. Okinawa still boasts some of the longest living people in the world. So how do the Japanese keep doing it? As the number of Japanese centenarians stays strong, most experts attribute this amazing feat to their diet. While many theories have been considered in the long-life expectancy of these vibrant people, the most common theory remains centered on the traditional Japanese diet of fish, rice and soy products.
The observation of long life in Japan has led many researchers to focus on the health benefits of soy, because soy foods are a primary protein source in many Asian countries where life expectancies are high. Soy is the only plant that contains protein equal in quality to all animal proteins (such as those found in meats, dairy products, and eggs). At Genisoy our goal is for you to enjoy health and happiness. And while you may not reach the amazing age of 100, you can still enjoy a long and happy life!
In this month’s Newsletter we talk about how to avoid aging skin, the good news of what soy can do for you, and how beginning this summer, a journey of long life can begin for you! We are going to give you some great information on how you can live a long and healthy life, and will reveal a couple of cool, refreshing summer recipes. You’ll also have a chance to win our “Free Soy For A Year” Sweepstakes where you could receive $30.00 in Genisoy Products each month for a year! Click Here for your official entry form. Let’s Beat the Sun!
It’s summer, and while you worship the rays of sunshine at the beach, don’t forget that those rays are out to get you! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and one person out of every five will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. The rays of summer are also the largest contributing factors to aging and wrinkling skin! Skin will eventually age all over the body, but much more so and faster where there has been the most sun exposure. Here are some simple guidelines on how you can avoid a brush with Melanoma, and keep your skin healthy and looking young!
Make sure you and your children lather up with a good sunscreen! No matter what outdoor activity you are involved in, make sure you are protected. Reapply often. The earlier and more often young children are exposed to the sun, the greater their chances of developing some form of skin cancer. Make sure they understand the dangers of the sun!
Make sure to wear protective clothing! Wear protective clothing as much as possible at all times. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, and hats will increase your protection.
Make Sure To Eat A Protective Diet! Sound strange? It shouldn’t! According to the National Cancer Institute, one-third of all cancer deaths are linked to diet. A cancer-fighting diet consists of eating less fat, more fiber and more fruits and vegetables. Make sure to eat plenty of antioxidants. These include foods that include the vitamins A, C, and E, as well as beta-carotene. Research has found that there is a link between a soy-rich diet and cancer prevention. Soy is low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and contains many important cancer prevention nutrients. Soy foods are rich in compounds called phytochemicals, which have been linked to fighting cancer. One family of phytochemicals is called isoflavones and is found in large quantities only in soybeans and in soy foods.
Stay in the shade! Remember that even though you are in the shade you can still be affected by the sun’s rays. It wouldn’t hurt to keep the sunscreen on as a constant precaution.
A tan is not what it appears. Your skin turns brown as a reaction to the sun’s rays. Your body isn’t asking for a tan, and there are plenty of other ways to make yourself feel beautiful. So stay away from tanning salons, because whether you are inside or outside there is no such thing as a safe tan!
Following these simple guidelines this summer will help prevent dryness, roughness, sagginess, skin growths, and wrinkles! Let’s Catch The Japanese!
While slowly gaining in life expectancy, the U.S. is still behind the Japanese. Is it really possible for us to reach the ripe old age of 100? More importantly, is it possible to reach the benchmark and still be in good physical and mental health? The good news is that is that not only is it possible, it’s becoming more probable all the time!
Using our long-living Okinawan friends as an example we can see that by making some fundamental lifestyle changes we too can find a long and happy life. The typical elderly Okinawan tends to get a good deal of physical and mental exercise, and their overall diets are low in fat. They tend to eat less salt, more fiber-filled fruits and vegetables, and more soy than any other population on earth. Soy is rich in antioxidant flavonoids, which may be one of reasons why the incidence of cancer is much less than in the United States.
Many studies have been done on the secret of living to a ripe old age, and there are many variables that scientists have studied in their research. While some issues in living to be 100 are not so clear, like the role of genetics, there are many that stand out as an important to consider if you’d like to live a long and healthy life. It seems that the most important things to do if you want long life have to do with lifestyle itself, and the reason many people won’t live a long life is that they won’t discipline themselves to make the sometimes challenging lifestyle changes that are necessary. Most studies indicate that it will take a combination of biological, psychological, and sociological characteristics to reach the age of 100.
Here is a quick summary of how you can make it to 100. First, change your diet into a low fat, high protein diet with plenty of soy foods. Next, stay active both mentally and physically. Most centenarians exercise every day! Centenarians also challenge themselves mentally. Your brain is a muscle, so make sure you use it. Many studies indicate that married people live longer, so stay married. Maintain your recommended weight. In other words, lose the excess weight. Being overweight about nullifies your chances of long life, and will create even more problems as you age. Don’t drink alcohol, or do so in moderation. Don’t smoke at all. Pray that you have a good genetic inheritance because long life seems to run in the family. Eliminate unnecessary stress. Find satisfying, meaningful work. If you're retired, find something to do that gives you purpose. Develop and practice an active social life with friends and loved ones. Eliminate the clutter in your life. In other words, live a simple life free of the traps of stress and materialism.
If you can manage these lifestyle changes, hopefully we’ll see you on the other side of 100!
