At Genisoy, as we welcome the New Year, we also welcome and embrace the opportunity to help you with the lifestyle changes you have resolved to make in 2010! Hopefully by now you’ve made your list of resolutions and are determined to make them stick.  If you are like most, the list includes one or more of the following goals: weight loss, a regular regiment of exercise, quitting smoking and/or drinking alcohol, a healthier diet, getting out of debt, being more altruistic, learning something new, spending more time with family and friends, getting organized, or just enjoying life more.  Did we hit a nail on the head?

While studies reveal that approximately 97% of those making New Years resolutions will abandon them within 30 days, we know it is possible for you to be among those who successfully keep your resolutions! It can be done, and has been done before.  As a matter of fact the practice of keeping resolutions has been going on for centuries.  This month we share a story that’s more than 400 years old, and reveal the secrets of a man who lived to the ripe age of 100 after being told he would be dead by age 40.

Happy New Year from all of us at Genisoy, and please enjoy this month’s Live Better Newsletter!

A New Year, A New and Thinner You!

Far and away the most common resolution made for the New Year is to lose weight.  If your goal is to lose weight this year and maintain the healthy diet that will keep you fit and trim, we’re here to help!  Are you ready for the new you?  Are you ready to look in the mirror and be proud of what you see?  Are you ready to build a healthier and happier you in 2010?

Soy protein has received a lot of attention for its ability to aid in weight loss and weight management.  The overall key to weight management is finding the right balance between diet and exercise, and studies suggest that soy protein may be an important part of the process.

Research confirms the importance of a diet that includes plant protein, such as soy, as it may be a significant factor in controlling caloric intake. Protein makes you feel full, or increases your state of satiety, over a longer period of time than if you consume mostly carbohydrates. The feeling of being full can lead to eating fewer calories during the day!  Soy foods have fewer calories, less fat and more protein than many other sources of protein. Therefore, top-quality, lean protein from soy foods can aid in weight control and limit the craving for more food!

The importance of these findings cannot be understated in the midst of a society where obesity has become an epidemic of vast proportion. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture advocate selecting lean sources of protein and eating foods that are higher in potassium, calcium, magnesium and other essential vitamins and nutrients, but lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. Soy foods can help Americans meet these dietary goals. Soy protein is not only low in fat, it is cholesterol free.  So avoid overeating, increase your physical activity, and choose a proper diet complete with a variety of delicious soy food products. This balance and healthy lifestyle will help you manage your body weight, reduce stress, not to mention a whole host of other benefits that come from a health conscious lifestyle!

Against all odds, you can succeed!

Stories of success remind us that it is possible to achieve great things by making the decision to turn away from a damaging lifestyle.  For centuries, one story stands out among the rest.  400 years ago a nobleman named Luigi Cornaro found himself facing certain death because of what he chose to put into his mouth.  Hopefully this story will inspire you to keep your resolutions this year, and for life.

One of the most well-known stories of how someone made the resolution to change and kept that resolution for life comes from a man named Luigi Cornaro.  More than 400 years ago in Italy, Cornaro, a nobleman, found himself younger than 40 years old a weak, sick and dying man.  And Luigi wasn’t facing death because of disease or genetic failure, but as a result of the lifestyle he chose to live.  Luigi lived his life freely, admittedly indulging so heavily on food and drink that death stared him in the face.  But Luigi Cornaro didn’t want to die.  So when physicians told him that he would be dead within months should he continue to eat and drink as he did, Luigi made the resolution that he would do whatever it took to live.  In short, Cornaro resolved to turn from the lifestyle that put him face to face with death and embraced a diet and lifestyle that would bring him life.  Luigi recognized that his resolution must be kept at all costs, realizing that he must form the powerful habits of a healthy life.

Luigi recognized that the resolution to develop good habits is a possible and powerful force. The story of Luigi is told today because of the decision he made to stick to his resolution.  He lived a long, productive and successful life, authoring his first of many writings at age 81.  As a result of the dietary and other changes he made, Cornaro lived 100 healthy and productive years, finally passing on peacefully while taking a nap in his rocking chair.

The story of Luigi Cornaro is an inspiration and terrific example of what is possible when resolutions are kept.  Your current situation may not be as bad as that of Luigi Cornaro, but you may see that the eating habits you are practicing could eventually lead to major health problems.  Like Luigi recognized 400 years ago, more and more nutritionists, physicians and other health care professionals are waking up and concluding that a proper diet is the most powerful weapon we have against sickness and disease.   And more research is showing how powerful soy can be in building health and longevity.
