Tips to Keeping Your Resolutions
Don’t despair! There are ways to succeed in keeping your New Years resolutions. While statistically most people fail their resolutions within 30 days, you can be among those who find success. The following are a few tried and true tips that will help you keep your resolutions for life!
Make a Plan of Attack
Plan now how you are going to keep your resolutions, how you are going to deal with temptation, and your plan of escape should you get too close to the fire. Make your plan specific. Your plan may include a list of people you are going to stay away from, or specific places where you regularly indulged your habits. If you are trying to lose weight, write down the specific aisles of the grocery store you are not going to drive your cart. Whatever your resolution make a solid and specific plan to achieve your goal.
Be Accountable
Let some people know what you are doing, and ask them to hold you accountable to the task. Whether friends or family ask them if it’s okay to give them a call when you are struggling or even have them call you every so often to check up on your progress. Who knows? Your transparency, determination and new lifestyle might rub off on them!
Don’t Plan to Fail
Successful resolution needs to have a strong determination. If you leave yourself room to go back to your old habit you are sure to go there. Don’t entertain the thought of failure, but if you do happen to slip don’t beat yourself up. Use the slip as a launching pad for an even stronger resolve. Let it make you angry that your habit has such a strong hold on you and go after it again.
Stick to it!
Your success depends on your determination and discipline to go the distance. Most experts agree that most habits take some time to develop. It takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and 6 months or more for it to become engrained in your lifestyle. This may vary a little from person to person, but if you stay the course your new habits will become second-nature.
Reward yourself
Make sure to give yourself a pat on the back for your success, but make sure you are wise about it. If your resolution is to lose weight, don’t reward yourself with a gallon of ice cream because you lost five pounds. Find another special way to reward yourself. Maybe it’s a new outfit or a massage. Be creative and enjoy the rewards.
