Heart disease can manifest itself as a stroke or a heart attack and is the number one killer of both women and men in the USA.

This month we are going to tell you how heart disease occurs and some things you can do to help prevent an untimely death from this killer.  The good news is that we know what causes heart disease and we know how to prevent it.  So it’s up to each of us to choose whether or not we will live a lifestyle that will prevent this killer disease.  The choice is up to you!   It’s no secret that the greatest weapons you have in this fight are diet and physical activity, but there are other things to consider.  We’re going to talk about some of these things and are also going to offer up some great tips and low-fat healthy recipes that will help keep heart disease away!

We’re here to help you live a better life.  One of the ways we are helping to keep your heart beating this month is by getting you in the mood to eat right by offering a free drinking cup with any order of your favorite Genisoy products.  The cup actually changes colors depending on what you put inside.  It actually makes drinking kind of fun.  This is just another way we are trying to reach our goal of watching you enjoy the physical and mental benefits of a life lived right!

Heart Disease!

That’s right!  Historically speaking, heart disease is a very recent phenomenon.  Prior to 1900 very few people died of coronary heart disease.  As we moved from an agrarian to industrial society, and as technology advanced, the incidence of heart disease increased dramatically!  In short, as life became progressively easier with less physical activity necessary to survive, along with a high-fat diet, heart disease became commonplace.  The incidence of heart disease became so prevalent between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic.

Now, can this killer be stopped?

Heart disease has a known variety of causes.  In general, the high incidence of this disease is attributed to an unhealthy lifestyle.  The incidence of smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and an unhealthy diet high in fat all can have a significant impact on heart health. Since heart disease is not always obvious, it is important to get regular check-ups and have cholesterol levels checked on a periodic basis. This is especially important if you have a history of heart disease within your family.

The heart is arguably the hardest working organ in your body! It beats over 35 million times per year, and over 2.5 billion times in the average lifetime. Unfortunately, with heart disease as the number one killer in the United States, chances are good that something will go wrong with your hard-working heart unless you take the time to do something about it!  Unlike an organ like your liver, when cells in your heart die from disease they never regenerate.  In other words, once these critical cells are gone, they leave your heart forever weaker.  Often, the first time someone thinks about their heart is after learning they have diminished heart strength from cell loss, their cholesterol levels are too high or getting a borderline blood pressure reading, or by hearing about a family member who has heart disease.   No matter why you are now seeking information on heart disease, it’s never too late to start taking care of your heart.  The sooner you start paying attention to a healthy-heart lifestyle, the healthier, happier and longer your life can be!  Simple steps like eating a proper diet, exercise, reducing stress, obtaining regular check-ups, and consuming 25 grams of soy protein a day will all support heart health.

Genisoy makes it easy for you to get the nutrition you need to support a heart-healthy diet. We offer a variety of soy products that taste delicious and promote balanced nutrition. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded that soy protein consumption (at least 25g per day) included in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels. Studies also suggest that soy protein may have a role in reducing the risk of certain cancers, positively effect bone health and reduce symptoms of menopause. Genisoy delivers a family of convenient delicioussoy products that make it easy to incorporate the health benefits of soy into your daily diet.

Awesome Low-Fat Healthy Recipes!

Diet is critical to losing weight and maintaining your weight goals, and to living a heart-healthy life in general.  You and your family will love these low calorie, low fat and delicious recipes!

For Starters…Nottuna Chick-pea Salad

This chick-pea salad has a taste and texture reminiscent of tuna salad.

  • 1 ½ cups cooked or canned chick-peas (garbanzo beans), rinsed well and drained
  • ¼ cup finely chopped celery
  • ¼ cup finely chopped mild, sweet onions
  • 2 to 3 table spoons Genisoy Natural Protein Powder stirred into 3 to 4 tablespoons of your favorite egg-and dairy-free mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast flakes
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Place the chick-peas in a food processor fitted with a metal blade and pulse until they are coarsely chopped.

Transfer the chopped beans to a medium mixing bowl, and stir in the remaining ingredients.  Mix well.  Serve the salad at once, or transfer it to a storage container, and chill it in the refrigerator.

Fettuccine Alfredo with Broccoli

Roman restaurateur Alfredo do Lello is credited with creating this dish in the 1920’s.  Traditionally, fettuccine noodles are enrobed in a sauce of butter, Parmesan cheese, heavy cream, and sometimes egg yolks.  This lighter version captures the rich taste of classic fettuccine Alfredo, but lets you indulge guilt-free.

Sauce

  • 1 ½ cups crumbled firm silken tofu
  • 1 scoop Genisoy Natural Protein Powder (1/4 cup)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
  • 1 tablespoon garlic granules
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon slat, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 12 ounces dry fettuccine noodles
  • 2 cups bite-size broccoli florets
  • 12 to 16 fresh basil leaves, torn (optional)
  • Ground black pepper, to taste

Make a garlic cream sauce by processing the crumbled tofu, protein powder, olive oil, nutritional yeast, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and Dijon mustard in a food processor or blender until completely smooth and creamy.  Set aside.

Fill a 4-quart saucepan two-thirds full with water, bring to a rolling boil, and cook the fettuccine in it until it is almost al dente.  Add the broccoli florets and cook until they are bright green.  Drain the pasta and broccoli well, and return them to the saucepan.

Add the garlic cream sauce to the cooked pasta and broccoli, and toss well until they are evenly coated.

Divide the fettuccine among 4 warm plates or pasta bowls.  Garnish each serving with the fresh basil leaves, if using, and ground black pepper.  Serve at once.

Yield 4 servings.  Per serving: Calories 439, Total Protein 28 g, Soy Protein 14g, Carbohydrates 50g, Fat 13g, Sodium 463 mg.

  • ¼ cup nutritional yeast (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Genisoy Natural Protein Powder
  • 1 (26-ounce) jar pasta sauce
  • ½ cup soy Parmesan

Boil the noodles in salt water until all dente, drain, rinse, and drain again.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Chop the basil, onion, and garlic in a food processor.  Add the tofu, lemon juice, salt, nutritional yeast, and protein powder, and process until it is the consistency of ricotta cheese.

Pour half of the pasta sauce over the bottom of a 2-quart baking dish.  Lay half of the noodles over the sauce.  Spread the tofu mixture over the noodles, cover with the rest of the noodles then spread the remaining pasta sauce over the top.  Sprinkle the soy Parmesan over the top.

Nobody Needs a Crisis of the Heart!

In the United States alone, one person dies of a heart related disease every 33 seconds.  More than 70 million Americans live every day with some form of heart disease, which can include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, angina (chest pain), heart attack and congenital heart defects.

Simply stated, if you are not practicing a heart-healthy lifestyle, heart disease is the most likely reason you will die.

But there are ways to avoid heart disease…

It is no secret that the continued high incidence of coronary artery disease is directly related to the lifestyle of Americans - the continued incidence of smoking, the growing incidence of obesity, alcohol consumption, stress, the sedentary lifestyles, and diets high in fat.

Here are some ways you can begin living a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Don’t Smoke or Use Any Kind of Tobacco

It should be no secret by now that cigarette smoking is hazardous to your heart, and if you quit now you greatly reduce your chances of heart disease.  A little less known fact is that second-hand smoke and smokeless tobacco products are also dangerous to your heart.  Tobacco is a proven killer.  It’s up to you.

Get Physical!

Regular aerobic physical activity plays an important role in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.  Whereas continued physical inactivity greatly increases your chances of heart disease and stroke, and is also linked to cardiovascular mortality.  Regular exercise or physical activity can also help in the control of blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes, obesity, and can also help reduce blood pressure. Research indicates that people who turn from their sedentary lifestyle after experiencing a heart attack go on to have better rates of survival and a better quality of life.  It’s up to you.

Eat Right!

There are right things to eat, and wrong things to eat.  It’s really very simple to eat what is right, and not eat what is wrong.  If you increase your regular intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products your chances of living longer increase dramatically.  It’s really that simple.  Eating the daily recommended doses of fruits, vegetables, legumes, low-fat soy protein and certain types of fish also can reduce your risk of heart disease and you will most likely live a healthier happier life.  It’s up to you.

Maintain the Proper Body Weight

There is a direct correlation between overweight, obesity and heart disease.  On average, higher body weights are associated with higher mortality rates.  Overweight and obesity also contribute to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, stroke, gallbladder disease, arthritis, sleep disturbances and problems breathing, and certain types of cancers. All of these, not to mention the potential social stigmatizations attached to overweight and obesity, including discrimination, and lowered self-esteem.  Even small reductions in weight can be beneficial. Lose it, keep it off, and you significantly decrease your chances of heart disease.  It’s up to you.

Have Routine Checkups

Even apparently healthy people experience heart attacks.  They are called silent heart attacks and are one reason regular screenings are highly recommended.  Basic physicals and checkups on your blood pressure and cholesterol levels can literally save your life.  Detecting problems early on greatly decreases your chance of being taken by heart disease.  The choice is up to you.

In summary, heart disease is often avoidable, and prevention is critical to the process.  Living a heart-healthy lifestyle isn’t complicated, and it doesn’t mean you need to live a life of fruits and nuts all day long.  It’s never too late to begin a lifestyle of diet and exercise that will significantly reduce your chances of getting heart disease.   Soy protein can also make it easier for you to be heart-healthy!  The Food and Drug Administration approved a health claim for foods that contain at least 6.25 grams of soy. The health claim states that, “25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.” Nutrition experts also agree that soy-based foods are good for you because they contain less saturated fat than meat does and also provide dietary fiber, high quality protein, minerals, iron, essential fatty acids, and other important nutrients.  Soy foods are a tasty way to lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase your HDL (good) cholesterol.

Genisoy makes it easy for you to get the FDA daily recommended amount of soy to help keep your heart-healthy and strong.  If you haven’t already done so, learn about what soy products are good for you.  Then choose from a variety of top-quality, lean protein from Soy foods to help create your defense against heart disease!
