Okay people, let’s shape up!  By now you can’t deny the importance of exercise.  “Oh no, it’s that dreaded word again!  Get me out of here!”  If you are afraid of the word, you’re not alone.  The majority of our population evidently shares the feeling and uses some form of excuse for not exercising based on statistical evidence of overweight, obesity, and other health problems related to an inadequate amount of activity.  But no matter what the excuse, that’s all they are, excuses!  We’re going to remind you this month how important it is to get out there and safely get a little activity on those muscles and heart so you can live a happier, healthier and longer life.  Along with other lifestyle deficiencies, a lack of exercise contributes to overall bad physical and emotional health, and premature death.  We’re also going to tell you what true fitness is all about and how to carve the habit of exercise into your life by revealing just how easy and fun it can be!

We’ve got some terrific Hot Summer Specials for you to enjoy including 50% off all Soy Crisps, and a chance to win one of five IPOD’s in our IPOD Shuffle Sweepstakes!  Click Here for your official entry form and your chance to win a 1 Gig IPOD Shuffle!

I’m not so fat, so what’s the Problem?

While overweight and obesity create obvious health problems, many people still use the excuse of being relatively thin as an excuse to not exercise.  While being thin is one indicator of better health, it does not necessarily automatically guarantee it!  Whether overweight or not, exercise is a critical part of health and longevity.

A steady stream of new research continues to flow, telling us that even moderate exercise contributes to health and longevity.  Conversely, lack of exercise contributes to an array of health risks.  For example, an inactive lifestyle can promote the onset of overweight and obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, and diminished mental ability.  These conditions, while not as prevalent in thinner people, still occur.  Over years of excuses, cholesterol is deposited in blood vessels from inactivity, smoking, eating too much fatty food, being overweight, and having high blood pressure. Heart attacks occur when fatty plaques and clots block the flow of blood to the heart, and if the person survives the attack, the heart is still permanently scarred.  So whether you are overweight or not, exercise is absolutely a critical contributor to good health.  Exercise improves fitness and fitness leads to better health and aging.  Better health and aging then leads to positive lifestyle changes that reduce human and financial losses associated with chronic diseases.  It’s really a no-brainer!

Along with some exercise be sure to stop eating fatty foods and an overabundance of calories.  Stop smoking, limit your alcoholic intake (get help if you need to), and lose weight!  If you do these things your chance of a normal life span greatly increases, and your chance of living in good health during your senior years is more likely than not.  As part of your heart-healthy exercise regiment, be sure to eat a diet rich in soy protein, which has been determined an important part of a healthy diet.

If you didn’t notice, summer is still here, and it’s hot, hot, and hotter!  Even though it’s hot, it’s still a great time to get into a lifestyle of activity!  For hard-core exercise enthusiasts, getting outside is a great time to work up a terrific sweat.  Caution should always be taken when going outside in the heat, and for those not as attuned to a regiment of exercise as the hard-core, an even higher level of precaution should take place.  Getting excited about shedding pounds in the heat is okay, but carelessness can lead to some severe problems and even death.

If you are an experienced athlete that is acclimated to the heat your bodies are more used to the heat than those who do not go outside on a regular basis.  You are probably also very good at taking the necessary precautions to avoid over-exertion, sunburn, heat rash, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or worse.  Still, never assume you will never succumb to problems related to the heat.  Thousands of people have died from heat-related illness.  Here are some precautions to take when you are planning an outside activity whether a friendly church picnic volleyball game, a quick run, or a bike ride in the park.

Drink Plenty of Fluids.  Drink, drink, drink!  And make your children and those around you drink as well.

Avoid Alcohol.  In this case, alcohol is not considered a fluid!  Alcohol can exponentially increase dehydration and problems that result.

Avoid Caffeine and fluids with high sugar content.  These can also dehydrate the body.

Stay in the Shade as much as Possible.  Hey, it’s cooler there.

Continue to drink fluids after exercise.  It’s about hydration and replenishment.  You will continue to sweat after exercise.  Keep drinking.

Be A Good Neighbor. Keep an eye out around you for people who might not be taking the proper precautions.  Remind your exercise buddies about being safe, and tell them you’re not excited about the idea of sharing your supply of water.  Make sure they bring their own.

Take Extra Care of Young Children.  Never leave a child in a hot car, and make sure they are hydrated and lathered up with sunscreen.

Protect Your Skin.  It’s called sunscreen.  Get some.

Protect Your Eyes.  Those things hanging on people’s faces are Sunglasses.  They are there for more reasons than just trying to look cool.

If you can, work out in the cooler hours of morning or evening.  Enough said?

Eat Light Meals.  Make sure to eat a healthy diet.

Wear Lightweight and Light Colored Cotton Clothing.  These help deflect the heat of the sun’s rays.

These are just a few tips to keep you safe when you are exercising in the summer heat.  For an after-exercise refreshment, Click Here for all of our terrific recipes for ice-cold Smoothies and Shakes!

Hey!  This Exercise thing isn’t so bad!

Some of the great marketing minds of our time have led us to believe that in order to be fit our bodies must look like the cover of Fitness magazine. Take a stroll down the beach and take a look at some of the finely sculpted, bronzed and toned bodies we’ve been programmed by these marketers to admire.  Can you see them?  Are you impressed?  In reality these people have gotten where they are for one of three reasons, or a combination of them all.  Many people look the way they do because they have been born with this particular genetic code.  Others have spent thousands of dollars on surgery, and others have spent thousands of hours in the gym.  Often times these people have done some of all three.  But the reality of being fit has very little to do with the rippling muscles you see on the beach.

The idea pushed by our television sets, magazines, and the Internet that real fitness requires a membership to your local gym and 6 hours of grueling workouts a day to get there is not only totally erroneous but has driven countless people into discouragement and often dangerous health practices.  When individuals fail to get instant results from a flurry of extreme diet and exercise they all too often either quit altogether or turn to dangerous diets, drugs or expensive workout machinery whose promises are empty.

The reality is that true fitness resides in a lifestyle of good health practices of which exercise plays an important role.  Don’t be deceived into thinking that exercise must consist of hours of grueling, sweaty and gut-wrenching workouts.  Research shows that a moderate amount of exercise done on a daily basis can result in significant health improvements including lowered blood pressure, lowered risk of heart attack and stroke, weight loss, and a decrease in the chance of getting diabetes. Coupled with a good diet, sensible exercise can grow into true fitness.

So here are some tips, and sensible, fun and readily available ways to make exercise a part of your healthy lifestyle!  Remember to choose activities that you enjoy and do something every day.  With so many ways to get some exercise, mix them up and do several different ones every day to keep your entire body in the game.  Most of all have fun!

Take a walk every day!  Walking is a proven way to achieve good fitness.

Take a swim or play with your kids in the pool

Join a Dance class

Take an aerobics class

Take up gardening and landscaping

Take a daily morning bike ride with your dog.  Your dog will benefit from the exercise as much as you do.

Walk your dog every day

While you are watching television, during the duration of every single commercial break do aerobic activities like jumping jacks, lunges, kickboxing, pushups, situps, etc.

Don’t sit there and watch your kids play every day, get out there and play with them yourself!  You’ll bond with them at the same time.

Buy a trampoline for your kids and use it yourself.

Walk around the house doing lunges instead of just walking

Do as many leg crunches as you can every time you use the microwave or drop and do some pushups.

Dump your slacker friends and start hanging around with active people

Play Basketball in your driveway.

Walk, Bike or run to work every day.

Sign up for an event that will help motivate you to stay active every day.

Play Tennis

Do some kickboxing moves for 20 minutes while watching tv, or run in place, jump rope, or do all three!

Multitask your morning by lifting weights while getting the kids ready for school.  Yes, it can be done!

Play Golf

Walk to the Coffee Shop every morning with a friend

If you’ve a desk job, take a few minutes every hour to push back your chair and do leg squats and standing pushups against your desk.

There are hundreds of creative exercise ideas, more than we can list here.  Remember, you don't have to go to the gym to achieve fitness. Stay with it long enough and you will crave it when it doesn’t happen.  Your body was meant to exercise.  As you begin your routine there will be days you don’t feel like doing it.  Unless you are sick, do it anyway!  You’ll be amazed at how your body kicks into the exercise gear once you start engaging in activity.  Make some simple lifestyle changes and you will reap the rewards of a happier, healthier and longer life.
