It comes as no surprise that health officials are saying that the nation is having a public health crisis. Now more than ever, with overweight and obesity rates climbing to unprecedented levels people are at risk of an array of problems including diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic diseases. That’s the bad news. The good news comes from a recent study which revealed that soy protein increases metabolism, boosts anti-hunger hormones, and can help make your mid-section a whole lot slimmer! In addition to aiding with weight loss, soy foods fit into the USDA Dietary Guidelines as a healthy source of protein. Soy foods contain no cholesterol, little or no saturated fat, high quality protein, and dietary fiber. Many soy foods also provide essential vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, vitamins A and D, calcium, iron, and potassium that our bodies need to stay healthy and active. So what is the bottom line? Experts recommend a diet complete with soy protein!
In this month’s newsletter we will take a closer look at how you can enjoy a slimmer, trimmer you by eating what is often called “The Miracle Food.” We’ll look at the problem of overweight and obesity, and how soy foods can help you get that belly under control and help you maintain a program of health and longevity!

Can Soy Help with Weight Loss? Absolutely!
In addition to the vast array of benefits derived from the consumption of soy products, there is a steady stream of information indicating that soy has a powerful connection with the ability to lose weight. In other words, when soy consumption goes up, weight goes down.
Soy protein has received a lot of attention for its ability to aid in weight loss and weight management. The overall key to weight management is finding the right balance between diet and exercise, and studies suggest that soy protein may be an important part of the process! Check out the article by Margaret Furtado, M.S., R.D. on the benefits of soy at http://health.yahoo.com/experts/weightloss/12/soy-and-weight-loss-hype-or-hope/
Research confirms the importance of a diet that includes plant protein, such as soy, as it may be a significant factor in controlling caloric intake. Protein makes you feel full, or increases your state of satiety, for longer than if you ate mostly carbohydrates. The feeling of being full can lead to eating fewer calories during the day! Soy foods have fewer calories, less fat and more protein than many other sources of protein. Therefore, top-quality, lean protein from soy foods can aid in weight control and limit the craving for more food!
The importance of these findings cannot be understated in the midst of a society where obesity has become an epidemic of vast proportion. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agricultureadvocate selecting lean sources of protein and eating foods that are higher in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other essential vitamins and nutrients, but lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. Soy foods can help Americans meet these dietary goals. Soy protein is not only low in fat, it is cholesterol free. So avoid eating too much, increase your physical activity, and choose a proper diet complete with a variety of delicious soy food products. This balance and a healthy lifestyle will help you maintain proper body weight and reduce stress, not to mention a whole host of other benefits that come from a health-conscious lifestyle!

The Obesity Epidemic
Take a look at these startling statistics! In the USA we have:
- 58 Million Overweight; 40 Million Obese; 3 Million morbidly Obese
- 8 out of 10 people over the age of 25 is overweight
- 78% of American's not meeting basic activity level recommendations
- 25% completely Sedentary
- 76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults 30-40 yrs old since 1990
In the past 30 years, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased to epidemic proportions! So what’s the problem? While careful not to oversimplify a very complicated issue, there is a simple answer for those who are willing.
The good news is that there is hope for a better life. The most common causes of overweight and obesity is the lack of regular physical activity and a very poor diet, and it’s never too late to begin a program that can help you lose weight and live a longer, healthier life. Even better news is that soy protein can help with both! Soy protein has received a lot of attention for its ability to aid in weight loss and weight management.
Overweight and obesity can contribute to a huge array of health problems including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Coronary heart disease
- Hypertension
- Stroke
- Gallbladder disease
- Dyslipidemia
- Osteoarthritis
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
- Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
- And MORE!
Despite these proven benefits of physical activity and proper diet, the vast majority (78%) do not meet basic activity levels to stay physically fit. Similarly, while research shows that good nutrition can help to lower people’s risk for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, some cancers, diabetes, and osteoporosis, the eating habits of the majority remain dismal at best.
It is scientific and common knowledge that regular physical activity and a balanced, nutritional diet reduce people’s risk for these problems. It also helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among older adults; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications. Physical activity can improve physical function, and can provide benefits for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, arthritis, lung disease, and other chronic diseases. In other words, it makes sense to exercise and eat right! Moreover, physical activity need not be strenuous to be beneficial. For example, adults of all ages benefit from moderate-intensity physical activity, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking most days of the week.
Decide today to live a better, healthier life. Begin by taking advantage of the benefits of soy products to help you lose weight and increase your energy on the road to a better life!
